Start of the persimmon season

From Blasco Fruit we wanted to let you know that the kaki season starts. We start with the kaki tomatero, already available from this week, and in mid-October we will introduce persimmon.

For this season, we hope to grow together with our clients, always providing the highest quality standards that represent us.

We spoke with José Luis, CEO of the company, to share his impressions regarding this new season.

First of all, he points out that it will be a year marked by a low supply, due to adverse weather: cold and rain at the beginning of last spring. This produces a negative effect on the trees, just at the moment of flowering, causing a brake on the first flowering of the persimmon. As a result, the beginning of the season with little product is expected, which will increase in the middle and late persimmon season.

This situation will mostly affect persimmon. However, a normal harvest is expected for the kaki tomatero, since the trees, in general, started to sprout later.

As for pests, as has been the case in recent years, kaki producers are forced to deal with cotonet and whitefly, among others, which can also cause a drop in production and supply of the product.

It is also worthy to note the uncertainty in the face of active armed conflicts, in particular the one in Ukraine, which affects all markets globally, due to the possible lack of supplies. Specifically, José Luis highlights the uncertainty regarding the supply of gas (necessary for the persimmon maturation). On the other hand, it is essential to take into account the increase in production costs, both due to the rise in the price of electricity and the different materials used in the marketing process of persimmon (boxes, plastics, stickers, etc. )

As a consequence of the situation described above, high market prices are expected, which will make it possible to compensate for the low harvest and high costs.
